Why Does My Sciatica Keep Coming Back?
Recurring sciatica can be frustrating, especially when your leg pain, numbness, tingling, or lower back discomfort improves and then returns weeks or months later. In many cases, symptoms come back because the underlying condition irritating the sciatic nerve has not been fully addressed.
At Everybody’s Chiropractic Center in Upper Darby, we evaluate patients with recurring sciatic symptoms to determine what may be contributing to repeated flare-ups. Treatment recommendations are based on your examination findings, symptoms, health history, and individual needs.

What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica refers to symptoms caused by irritation or compression involving the sciatic nerve or the nerve roots that form it. The sciatic nerve travels from the lower back through the buttocks and down the legs.
According to MedlinePlus, sciatica may cause pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling that travels from the lower back into the leg.
Common symptoms include:
- Lower back pain
- Buttock pain
- Pain traveling down one leg
- Tingling or numbness
- Burning sensations
- Leg or foot weakness
- Difficulty sitting for long periods
Although symptoms sometimes resolve, they may return when the underlying mechanical or neurological problem remains.
Why Recurring Sciatica Happens
There is not one cause of recurring sciatica. Instead, several conditions can repeatedly irritate the nerve or nearby spinal structures.
Herniated or Bulging Discs
A bulging or herniated spinal disc can irritate nearby nerve roots. Symptoms may decrease as inflammation settles, but the underlying disc problem may continue to contribute to future flare-ups.
If disc problems are suspected, some patients may also be candidates for spinal decompression.
Poor Posture and Prolonged Sitting
Long periods of sitting can increase stress on the lower back. Furthermore, poor workstation positioning, frequent driving, or limited movement during the day may aggravate an already sensitive area.
Improving posture and changing positions regularly may therefore be an important part of preventing repeated episodes.
Weakness and Reduced Mobility
The muscles surrounding the abdomen, hips, pelvis, and lower back help support normal movement.
When strength or mobility is limited, additional stress may be placed on the lumbar spine during bending, lifting, walking, or exercise. As a result, symptoms may repeatedly return.
Repetitive Work Activities
Some occupations require repeated lifting, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, or prolonged driving.
Construction workers, warehouse employees, healthcare professionals, delivery drivers, restaurant workers, landscapers, and other physically active workers may therefore experience repeated irritation when an underlying problem has not been corrected.
Degenerative Changes
Age-related changes such as spinal arthritis, degenerative disc disease, and spinal stenosis may also contribute to recurring symptoms.
Because these conditions vary considerably between patients, an examination can help determine which structures may be involved.
Signs Your Recurring Sciatica Should Be Evaluated
Consider having your condition evaluated when:
- Symptoms continue for several weeks
- Pain repeatedly disappears and returns
- Numbness or tingling persists
- You notice weakness in the leg or foot
- Walking becomes difficult
- Sitting consistently aggravates symptoms
- Pain interferes with sleep or normal activities
In addition, symptoms that are changing or becoming progressively worse deserve closer attention.
Chiropractic Care for Recurring Sciatica
For some patients, chiropractic care may be part of a conservative approach to recurring sciatica.
At Everybody’s Chiropractic Center, treatment is individualized rather than using the same approach for every patient.
Depending on examination findings, care may include:
- Chiropractic adjustments
- Joint mobilization
- Soft-tissue techniques
- Corrective exercises
- Mobility work
- Postural recommendations
- Rehabilitation exercises
The goal is to improve movement and function while addressing factors that may be contributing to repeated irritation.

SoftWave Therapy and Recurring Sciatic-Type Pain
SoftWave Therapy uses acoustic-wave technology and may be considered for certain patients when irritated muscles or other soft tissues contribute to discomfort around the lower back, hip, or buttock.
Depending on the condition, SoftWave may be incorporated into a broader conservative treatment plan designed to improve function and reduce musculoskeletal discomfort.
However, SoftWave is not appropriate for every cause of sciatica. Therefore, treatment should be based on examination findings rather than symptoms alone.
Can Sciatica Stop Coming Back?
Whether sciatica returns depends largely on its cause.
For example, some people may significantly reduce flare-ups by improving mobility, strengthening supporting muscles, changing lifting habits, improving workstation ergonomics, or addressing an underlying spinal problem.
Other patients have structural or degenerative conditions that require ongoing management.
Therefore, the goal should not simply be temporary pain relief. Identifying factors that repeatedly trigger symptoms can help create a more complete long-term strategy.
When Sciatica Requires Prompt Medical Attention
Most episodes of sciatic-type pain are not emergencies. However, seek prompt medical evaluation for symptoms such as:
- Progressive leg weakness
- Loss of bowel or bladder control
- Numbness involving the groin or saddle area
- Severe symptoms following significant trauma
- Fever associated with severe back pain
- Rapidly worsening neurological symptoms
These symptoms require appropriate medical assessment rather than routine conservative care.
