Can Chiropractic Help Arm and Hand Tingling?
Arm and hand tingling may feel like pins and needles, burning, numbness, or reduced sensation in the fingers, wrist, forearm, or upper arm. These symptoms may come from irritation of a nerve in the neck, pressure on a peripheral nerve, carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, or another medical condition.
At Everybody’s Chiropractic Center in Upper Darby, PA, we evaluate the neck, shoulders, arms, wrists, posture, movement, strength, reflexes, and symptom pattern to help determine what may be contributing to the problem.
Common Causes of Arm and Hand Tingling
Nerves travel from the cervical spine through the shoulder, arm, wrist, and hand. Irritation anywhere along that pathway may cause symptoms farther away from the original source.
Possible causes include:
- Cervical radiculopathy
- Bulging or herniated cervical discs
- Degenerative changes in the neck
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Ulnar nerve irritation
- Thoracic outlet syndrome
- Muscle tension
- Repetitive strain
- Previous injuries
- Poor posture
Cervical radiculopathy may cause pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling that travels from the neck into the arm or hand. However, similar symptoms may also develop from nerve compression at the wrist or elbow.
Symptoms Associated With Arm and Hand Tingling
Symptoms may include:
- Pins-and-needles sensations
- Numbness in the hand or fingers
- Burning discomfort
- Pain traveling from the neck into the arm
- Weakness in the hand
- Reduced grip strength
- Difficulty holding objects
- Symptoms that worsen at night
- Symptoms that change with neck, wrist, or elbow position
Additionally, the affected fingers may provide clues about which nerve is involved.
Can Neck Problems Cause Arm and Hand Tingling?
Yes. A nerve root in the cervical spine may become irritated by a disc problem, arthritis, narrowing around the nerve, inflammation, or another condition.
Symptoms may begin in the neck or shoulder and then travel into the arm, hand, or fingers. This pattern is often associated with cervical radiculopathy.
Can Carpal Tunnel Cause Hand Tingling?
Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when the median nerve becomes compressed at the wrist. It commonly causes numbness or tingling in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger.
However, not every case of hand numbness begins at the wrist. Therefore, an evaluation should consider the neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and other possible causes.
Chiropractic Care for Arm and Hand Tingling
At Everybody’s Chiropractic Center, we begin with an examination rather than assuming every case has the same cause.
Depending on the findings, care may include:
- Chiropractic adjustments
- Postural recommendations
- Soft-tissue treatment
- Mobility exercises
- Strengthening and rehabilitation
- Ergonomic guidance
- Home exercise recommendations
The goal is to improve movement, reduce mechanical stress, and address factors that may contribute to nerve irritation.
Can Spinal Decompression Help?
Cervical spinal decompression gently stretches the neck. It may be considered when examination findings suggest that a disc problem or mechanical pressure may be contributing to nerve-related symptoms.
However, decompression is not appropriate for every condition. Recommendations should depend on the health history, examination, and any relevant imaging.
Can SoftWave or Laser Therapy Help?
Depending on the condition, SoftWave Therapy or Class IV laser therapy may be used to support circulation, tissue recovery, movement, and comfort.
These therapies do not treat every cause of numbness or tingling. First, the source of the symptoms should be evaluated.
Will I Need X-Rays or Other Testing?
X-rays are not automatically necessary for every patient. First, we review the symptom pattern, health history, strength, reflexes, range of motion, posture, and orthopedic findings.
When clinically appropriate, imaging or referral for additional testing may help identify disc problems, arthritis, narrowing around a nerve, or another condition.
Warning Signs That Require Prompt Medical Attention
Seek immediate medical attention if tingling or numbness occurs with:
- Sudden arm or hand weakness
- Facial drooping
- Difficulty speaking
- Chest pain or shortness of breath
- Loss of coordination
- Difficulty walking
- Severe headache
- Major trauma
- A cold, pale, blue, or severely swollen arm
- Rapidly worsening symptoms
Persistent, recurring, or worsening symptoms should also be properly evaluated. Numbness and tingling may have many possible causes, including nerve injuries and medical conditions unrelated to the spine.
