What to Expect During Your First Chiropractic Visit in Upper Darby
Your First Chiropractic Appointment: What Happens?
If you are preparing for your first chiropractic visit in Upper Darby, it is normal to have questions about what will happen, whether you will receive an adjustment, and how the chiropractor will determine which treatment may be appropriate.
At Everybody’s Chiropractic Center, your first visit begins with understanding your symptoms, health history, daily activities, previous injuries, and what you hope to improve. Rather than assuming that every patient needs the same treatment, Dr. Dan Klein performs an individualized evaluation before making recommendations.
Our office is located in Upper Darby near Havertown and Drexel Hill and has provided chiropractic care to the surrounding Delaware County community for more than 30 years.
Step 1: Your Chiropractic Consultation
Your first appointment usually begins with a conversation about what brought you into the office.
We may discuss:
- Where you are experiencing pain or discomfort
- When your symptoms began
- Activities that make the symptoms better or worse
- Previous injuries or accidents
- Your occupation and daily physical demands
- Exercise and activity levels
- Previous chiropractic, medical, or physical therapy care
- Current medications or relevant health conditions
- Your goals for treatment
This information helps us understand your situation before beginning the physical examination.
Step 2: Chiropractic Examination
Next, Dr. Klein will perform an examination based on your symptoms and health history.
Depending on your condition, this may include:
- Range-of-motion testing
- Orthopedic testing
- Neurological testing
- Muscle strength testing
- Postural assessment
- Joint mobility evaluation
- Functional movement testing
For example, someone experiencing recurring neck pain may require a different examination than a patient with lower back pain or sciatica.
For more information about neck symptoms, see our Neck Pain Chiropractic Care page.
Step 3: Will I Need X-Rays?
Not every chiropractic patient needs X-rays.
Whether imaging is appropriate depends on factors such as your symptoms, examination findings, health history, previous injuries, and other clinical considerations.
If you already have recent X-rays, MRI studies, or CT scans, bring them with you when possible. We can review relevant findings as part of your evaluation.
If your examination suggests that additional imaging or evaluation by another healthcare provider may be appropriate, we will discuss that with you.
Step 4: Understanding Your Examination Findings
After the examination, we will explain what we found in straightforward language.
This may include discussing:
- Areas of restricted movement
- Muscle tightness or weakness
- Joint mobility
- Postural findings
- Neurological or orthopedic test results
- Activities that may be contributing to your symptoms
Most importantly, we will discuss whether chiropractic care appears appropriate for your condition and what other conservative treatment options may be considered.
Will I Get Adjusted During My First Chiropractic Visit?
Possibly.
Some patients may receive chiropractic treatment during their first appointment when it is appropriate based on the evaluation. However, receiving an adjustment on the first visit should not be assumed for every patient.
There are situations in which additional information, imaging, or further evaluation may be appropriate before beginning treatment.
If chiropractic treatment is recommended, we will explain what we are recommending and why.
What Can Chiropractic Treatment Include?
A treatment plan depends on your individual condition and examination findings.
When appropriate, care may include:
- Chiropractic adjustments
- Joint mobilization
- Therapeutic rehabilitation
- Corrective exercises
- Soft tissue techniques
- Postural recommendations
- Home exercises
- Ergonomic recommendations
For some patients, additional conservative treatment options may also be considered.
For example, certain musculoskeletal conditions may be appropriate for SoftWave Therapy.
For certain disc-related conditions, spinal decompression therapy may also be considered after an appropriate evaluation.

What Should You Bring to Your First Chiropractic Appointment?
To make your first visit easier, consider bringing:
- A photo ID
- Insurance information, when applicable
- A list of medications or supplements
- Information about previous injuries or surgeries
- Relevant medical reports
- Previous X-rays, MRI reports, or CT reports if available
- Comfortable clothing that allows you to move during the examination
You should also be prepared to describe when your symptoms began and which activities tend to aggravate or improve them.
How Long Will the First Chiropractic Visit Take?
A first visit generally requires more time than a routine follow-up because we need to review your history, perform the examination, and discuss our findings.
The exact length varies depending on the complexity of your condition and whether additional testing or treatment is appropriate.
Our goal is not to rush your initial evaluation. Instead, we want enough information to make appropriate recommendations based on your individual situation.
What Happens After Your First Visit?
After your evaluation, Dr. Klein will discuss the recommended next steps.
If chiropractic care is appropriate, your treatment plan will be based on factors such as:
- Your diagnosis or clinical findings
- The severity and duration of your symptoms
- Your mobility and strength
- Your occupation
- Your activity level
- Previous injuries
- Your individual recovery goals
Additionally, treatment recommendations may change as your symptoms and function change over time.
